drive-by blogging

My boss, because he operates his kitchen on a budget, reviews employees’ hours.

Yesterday he says something most unusual:

“You worked only 56 hours (in this past two-week pay period). That’s not enough to live on!!”

Hey, that’s what I’ve been sayin’!

He examines the schedule and says: “Why donchyou start coming in at 10 a.m. instead of 3 p.m. on Saturdays for some extra hours.”

Henceforth I’ll be working approximately 11-hour days, instead of 6-, on Saturdays, starting as of, oh, in 20 minutes!

So I can’t stay. I’d like to. I’d like to sit and enjoy my morning and catch up on blogging and etc.

However, a paycheck beckons. For those thinking the extra 4 hours means beaucoup bucks, lemme clarify, it means nothing of the sort! The bump up in hours only brings me closer to 30 hours a week; the pay, well, it’s menial labor so you do the math.

I survived a 14-hour day yesterday, no breaks save for the required 30 minutes for lunch. It’s my own damn fault I didn’t take the two 10-minute breaks legally required. There are reasons I don’t, none of which I care to write about (or have time to write) at the moment.

I came home utterly down and before bed hopped onto craigslist looking at other jobs. Nothing in my field of course.

I’m down.

And somehow must muster up the energy to pull me through the 11-hour day ahead, a huge chunk of which is dishwashing.

Not for nuthin’ but I’m drowning in unhappiness.

A weak attempt at humor.

See y’all later.

@capra – Your boss seems to believe in a “No good deed shouls go unpunished” management style…” hahaa, no; however, unlike most bosses, he IS in touch with reality and recognizes that 28 hours a week (and at low pay) is insufficient so sought a spot to add more hours for my benefit. How many bosses would do *that,* I ask!

The boss must be very impressed with your efforts, so it might lead to bigger and better things. You rule!

@FD – The boss must be very impressed with your efforts, so it might lead to bigger and better things. He is but that’s not why he added the extra 4 hours a week; he did it because he recognizes that some 28 hours a week (and at low pay) is not enough to live on. In terms of it leading to bigger and better, for the last time, my career is in communications (think publishing, newspapers, etc). *not* food service; this is no more than a stopgap job. The only bigger this job could lead to is the waistline! 😀
